Lighthouse Tour

Lighthouse Tour

Cape May’s section of the Jersey Shore is home to one of the state’s true historical treasures. The Cape May Lighthouse, built in 1859 and automated in 1946, was restored and still operated by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts (MAC) in the 1990s. It’s open for visitors from April through November and on weekends throughout most of the year. Full Moon Lighthouse Climbs are also offered on select dates. Visitors can take a Cape May lighthouse tour up the 199-step spiral staircase for a view of Cape May City and the famous Wildwood to the north from 157 feet up. On good times, you can even see Cape Henlopen in Delaware to the west! If you don’t choose to make the climb, you can still check out the Visitor’s Orientation Center and Museum Shop on the grounds nearby.

World War II Tower

World War II Tower

Although it resembles an abandoned lighthouse, the tower is actually a defense post from the days of World War II, when concerns about German ships and submarines shut down Cape May’s actual lighthouse and kept the windows of its homes dark at night. Towers like No. 23 were equipped with guns and placed up and down the banks of the Delaware River and elsewhere in Cape May County.
